Mendham and Withersdale Parish Council

The Parish Council has 9 councillors and meets every two  months. Villagers are welcome to attend these meetings and hear about village matters and planning applications.

Parish churches

 All Saints, Mendham and St Mary Magdalene in Withersdale Street. The Vicar is the Revd Susan Loxton, who covers Mendham, Withersdale, Weybread, Fressingfield and Metfield.

Five Alive is the monthly parish magazine which is delivered free to every household in the parishes served by our vicar. It always includes news from all the parishes, details of community events and so on

Other denominations

There are Methodist Chapels in Fressingfield and Harleston. United Reform and Catholic Churches are in Harleston. There is a Baptist Chapel in Fressingfield.

Schools

Mendham Primary School is in the centre of the village, and takes pupils up to Year 6 (11years old). The Headteacher is Mr C Digby, who can be contacted on 01379 852520  The school also runs a lively After School Club until 6.00pm most evenings, and a Holiday Club as required during school holidays

There is a nursery school in Fressingfield that acts as a feeder into Mendham Primary.  Pupils at Year 7 normally go to Stradbroke High School(specialist business college), but can opt to go to Bungay, Harleston, Framlingham or elsewhere. 

Bus services

There is a ‘First bus’ service to Harleston from Metfield on Wednesday morning which leaves Metfield Church at 10.40 am returning at 13.10pm from Harleston. Passengers can also use the Schools bus leaving Metfield at 7.30am.

The Waveney Community Bus is a voluntary service which runs on a weekly timetable to local towns calling at the villages on the routes. The bus starts in Metfield where it is garaged and calls at Mendham car park and Withersdale Street near to the telephone box.

Wednesday - am Halesworth. Leaves at 8.56 am
                     pm Harleston. Leaves at 1.25 pm
Thursday - Bungay. Leaves at 9.07am
Friday - Diss, via Harleston. Leaves at 9.14 am
Saturday - 1st week in month - Norwich. Leaves at 9.01 am
                 3rd week in month - Lowestoft. Leaves at 9.11 am

This service accepts free bus passes. The bus is also available for private hire (14 passengers + driver). Contact 01379 586191

The 'Boarder Hopper' is a ‘dial a ride’ service. There is a small registration and annual subscription each year but once registered concessionary bus pass holders travel free.  For details contact 01379 854800

Mobile library

The Waveney Mobile Library van calls at Withersdale Street on alternate Mondays from 10.35am -11.30am. There are also branch libraries at Halesworth and Bungay (Suffolk) and Harleston (Norfolk).

Metfield Community Shop

The shop is run by volunteers and is open as follows:

Monday to Friday - summer 7.30am - 6pm (winter 8am - 6pm)
Saturday - summer 7.30am to 5pm (winter 8am - 5pm)
Sunday - 10.00am - 1pm

A range of goods are sold including newspapers, groceries, delicatessen foods, locally produced meats, fruit and vegetables and bread and cakes cooked on the premises. There are many leaflets for local attractions and services for you to read while you enjoy a cup of coffee or tea! Volunteers are welcome. Village Hall

The new village hall has only recently been completed and is on the Metfied side of Withersdale Street. There are a variety of events held during the year and also regular classes. The hall is available for private hire and for details contact Julie Herbert on 01379 588202.

Veterinary Services

The nearest Veterinary Surgeons is based in Harleston, 01379 852146.  All sorts of pets and larger animals can be treated.  There is another Veterinary surgery at Bungay, 01986 892771

The village hall committee organised an evening where Stewart Orr presented archive films contributing his normal fee. £715.10 was raised.
